Your theme controls how your WordPress site looks and, often, how fast it loads. The first video explains how to choose one; the second shows how to install it.
How to choose a theme
- Speed: lightweight themes load faster. Test the demo on a phone.
- Mobile-friendly: it must look good on small screens.
- Regular updates and good reviews: check when it was last updated and how many sites use it.
- Page builder support: if you use Elementor or the block editor, make sure the theme works well with it.
- Flexibility: header and footer options, colour and font controls.
- Support: premium themes include support and extra features.
Avoid themes stuffed with sliders, animations and bundled plugins. They look impressive in demos and slow real sites down.
How to install a theme
- In WordPress, go to Appearance, then Themes, then Add New.
- Search the free theme directory, or choose Upload Theme for a premium theme's zip file.
- Install, then Activate.
- Import a starter template if the theme offers one.
After installing
Set your colours and fonts. Our colour palette from image tool pulls brand colours from your logo. Delete themes you do not use, except one default theme as a backup.
