Your WordPress theme controls design and affects speed, security and how easy the site is to update. A poor choice can slow everything down.
What to look for
- Speed: lightweight themes load faster. Test the theme demo on PageSpeed Insights.
- Regular updates: recent updates and compatibility with the latest WordPress.
- Good reviews and support.
- Mobile-friendly design.
- Accessibility: readable text and contrast; check with our colour contrast checker.
- Compatibility: with your page builder or the block editor.
Free vs premium
Both can be good. Premium themes often include support and extra features. Buy only from reputable sources; never use “nulled” (pirated) themes, which often contain malware.
Avoid bloated themes
Multipurpose themes with dozens of demos, sliders and bundled plugins can be heavy. Choose one that does what you need.
Block themes
Newer block themes use WordPress’s Site Editor and can be lighter than themes relying on heavy page builders.
Test before committing
Install on a staging site, add real content and images (compressed with our image compressor), and test speed and mobile layout.
