A smaller, engaged list performs better than a large list full of inactive or invalid addresses. Cleaning improves deliverability and lowers costs on tools priced by list size.
What to remove
- Hard bounces.
- Repeated soft bounces.
- Duplicates; remove them with our duplicate line remover.
- Obvious typos and fake addresses.
- Role addresses (info@, admin@) if they never engage.
- Long-term inactive subscribers after a re-engagement attempt.
Steps
- Export your list.
- Fix formatting, lowercase and duplicates with our email list cleaner.
- Segment inactive subscribers (for example, no opens or clicks in 6 months).
- Send them a re-engagement email. Read re-engagement and sunset policies.
- Remove those who still do not engage.
How often
Every 3–6 months for most businesses, and before importing old lists.
Never buy lists
Bought lists cause bounces and spam complaints, may break data protection rules, and can get your account suspended.
