When someone nearby searches for what you sell, the map results appear before the normal website links. The three businesses shown there get most of the calls, direction requests and visits. Which three Google picks depends largely on your Google Business Profile.
These are the twelve fixes we make first for clinics, shops, coaching institutes and service businesses. Most take less than an hour, and none of them cost anything.
Quick summary: choose the right categories and fill in every section. Add real photos every week, get a steady flow of reviews and reply to all of them. Then track the calls so you know it is working.
1Pick the most specific primary category
Your primary category has more influence on which searches you appear for than anything else on the profile. Choose the most specific option that describes your main business. “Dental clinic” beats “Doctor”, and “Interior designer” beats “Designer”.
To find the right one, search for your main service and look at the categories the top three map results use. If they all use the same one, you probably should too.
2Add the right secondary categories
You can add up to nine additional categories. Use them for other services you genuinely offer, such as “Orthodontist” and “Cosmetic dentist” for a dental clinic. Do not add categories for things you do not do; it confuses Google and the customers who find you.
3Use your real business name, nothing more
Adding keywords or your city to the name, like “Sharma Dental Clinic Best Dentist Rewari”, breaks Google’s guidelines and can get the profile suspended. Use the name on your signboard and invoices. The categories and description do the keyword work instead.
4Write a description that says what, where and for whom
You have 750 characters. Use the first two sentences to say what you do, where you are and who you help, because that is often all people read. Then list your main services and what makes you different. Skip links, offers and capital letters.
“Family dental clinic in Rewari offering root canals, implants, braces and teeth whitening. Open six days a week with evening appointments for working patients.”
5Get your hours right, including holidays
Nothing loses a customer faster than arriving at a closed shop that Google said was open. Check your regular hours, and add special hours before Diwali, Holi and other holidays. Profiles with accurate hours are also more likely to be shown for “open now” searches.
6List every service and product
Fill in the Services section with each thing you sell, with a short description and a price or price range if you can. Product-based businesses should add their top products with photos. These entries help Google match you to more specific searches, like “braces cost” or “modular kitchen designer”.
7Set service areas if you travel to customers
Plumbers, cleaners, tutors and others who go to the customer can hide their address. Instead, they can set up to 20 service areas, such as cities, districts or PIN codes. Only include places you really serve.
8Upload real photos every week
Profiles with plenty of recent photos get more direction requests and website clicks. Add a clear photo of the outside of your premises so people recognise it, then add the inside, your team, and your work or products. Aim for two or three new photos a week, taken on a phone in good light.
Avoid stock photos and heavy text on images. Real, recent photos build more trust and are less likely to be rejected.
9Ask every happy customer for a review
The number of reviews, how recent they are and your average rating all affect how often you appear and how often people choose you. The simplest system is to ask at the moment a customer is happiest, right after the job is done.
- Copy your review link from the profile (“Ask for reviews”) and save it as a WhatsApp quick reply.
- Print the link as a QR code for your counter or reception.
- Send the link the same day. Requests sent a week later rarely get a response.
Never offer discounts or gifts in exchange for reviews, and never write them yourself. Google removes these reviews and can penalise the profile.
10Reply to every review within a day
Replies show future customers that you care. Thank people by name for positive reviews and mention the service they used. For negative reviews, stay calm, apologise for the experience, and invite them to call you so you can fix it. Potential customers judge you more on your reply than on the complaint.
11Post an update or offer every week
Posts appear on your profile and show Google that the business is active. Share offers, new services, festival hours, before-and-after photos or answers to common questions. Add a button such as “Call now” or “Book” to every post.
12Track the calls and clicks
Your profile’s Performance section shows calls, direction requests, website clicks and the searches people used to find you. Check it monthly. To see profile visitors in Google Analytics as well, add a tracking tag to your website link, for example:
https://yourwebsite.com/?utm_source=google&utm_medium=organic&utm_campaign=gbp |
Your weekly and monthly checklist
| How often | What to do |
|---|---|
| Every day | Reply to new reviews and questions. |
| Every week | Add 2–3 photos and one post. Send review links to that week’s customers. |
| Every month | Check calls, directions and search terms in Performance. Update services and prices. |
| Before holidays | Set special hours. |
Most businesses that work through this list see more calls and direction requests from Maps within four to eight weeks. If you would rather have it done for you, our Google Business Profile service covers all twelve fixes and the weekly upkeep.
