Instagram allows longer reels than before, but longer is not automatically better. The right length is however long it takes to deliver the value, and no more.
Length by goal
| Goal | Typical length |
|---|---|
| Quick tip or trend | 7–15 seconds |
| Product showcase | 10–20 seconds |
| Before and after | 10–30 seconds |
| Tutorial or explainer | 30–90 seconds |
| Story or case study | 45–90 seconds |
Why watch time matters
Instagram looks at how much of a reel people watch and whether they rewatch. A tight 12-second reel watched fully often beats a 60-second reel abandoned halfway.
Tips
- Cut every second that does not add value.
- Hook in the first two seconds.
- Loop short reels so the end flows into the start.
- Check retention in Insights and see where people drop off.
