If you serve customers in several cities, you want to appear when people search in each one. The tempting shortcut, copying one page and changing the city name, usually fails. Here is what works.
Why copy-paste city pages fail
Google looks for pages that are genuinely useful. Dozens of near-identical pages with only the city name changed look like doorway pages, which Google’s guidelines warn against. They rarely rank and can drag down the rest of your site.
What makes a good city page
- Real local information: areas you cover, local landmarks, travel time, local rules or conditions.
- Local proof: projects, clients or reviews from that city.
- Local details: an address or branch if you have one, service areas if you visit customers.
- Useful content: prices, timelines and answers that apply to that city.
Start with the cities that matter most
Create pages for the cities where you have real customers or a real presence first. Five strong city pages beat fifty thin ones.
Use your Google Business Profile properly
If you have branches, give each its own verified profile. If you travel to customers, set service areas. Do not create profiles at addresses where you do not operate; that breaks Google’s rules.
Link it all together
Create a locations page that links to each city page, and link each city page to the relevant services. This helps visitors and search engines understand your coverage.
Build local trust
Local directory listings, local news mentions and links from businesses in each city all help that city page rank.
