In Google Analytics 4, “engagement rate” is the main measure, and bounce rate is its opposite.
Definitions in GA4
- Engaged session: lasted longer than 10 seconds, had a key event, or viewed two or more pages.
- Engagement rate: engaged sessions ÷ all sessions.
- Bounce rate: sessions that were not engaged.
Is a high bounce rate bad?
Not always. A visitor who reads your blog post for three minutes and leaves is engaged in GA4. A visitor who leaves within seconds is a bounce.
When it signals a problem
- Landing pages from ads with very low engagement: the page may not match the ad or loads too slowly.
- A sudden change after a website update.
- Low engagement from mobile only: a mobile usability issue.
How to improve engagement
- Match pages to the ad or search intent.
- Faster loading.
- Clear headline and next steps.
- Internal links to related pages.
