HTML (HyperText Markup Language) is the language every web page is built with. It describes the content: headings, paragraphs, images, links and more. These two videos explain HTML from scratch and show you how to write your first page.
The structure of an HTML page
Every page follows the same basic skeleton:
<!DOCTYPE html>
<html lang="en">
<head>
<meta charset="utf-8">
<title>My first page</title>
</head>
<body>
<h1>Hello world</h1>
<p>This is my first web page.</p>
</body>
</html>
- <!DOCTYPE html> tells the browser this is a modern HTML page.
- <head> holds information about the page, such as the title and meta tags. Our meta tag generator writes these for you.
- <body> holds everything visible on the page.
Key ideas
- Tags are written in angle brackets, usually in pairs: an opening tag and a closing tag with a slash.
- Elements are a tag plus its content.
- Attributes add extra information, like the address of a link.
- HTML handles structure; CSS handles style; JavaScript handles behaviour.
