When reach drops, many people say they have been “shadowbanned”. Instagram does not use that term, but it does limit how some content is recommended.
What really happens
Instagram has recommendation guidelines. Content or accounts that break them may not be shown to non-followers in Explore, Reels or hashtag pages. Your followers can still see your posts.
How to check
Go to Settings, then Account Status. It shows whether your account or content is eligible to be recommended, and lists any removed content.
Common reasons for limited recommendations
- Posts that violated community guidelines.
- Content considered misleading, sensitive or low quality.
- Reposted content you do not own.
- Spam-like behaviour: mass following, buying engagement.
Myths
- “Using 30 hashtags gets you banned.” Not automatically, but a few relevant hashtags work better. Use our hashtag generator.
- “Editing a post kills reach.” No strong evidence for this.
- “Business accounts get less reach.” Instagram has said account type does not determine reach.
What to do
- Check Account Status and appeal wrong decisions.
- Remove content that breaks guidelines.
- Focus on original, useful content.
