Meta ads let you show adverts on Facebook, Instagram, Messenger and WhatsApp to people in the exact areas, age groups and interests you choose. For many Indian businesses they are the fastest way to get new enquiries, often within days of launching.
In short: set up tracking before you spend anything, and start with one clear offer. Test several ads and follow up every lead within minutes. Judge ads by cost per customer, not likes.
How Meta ads work
You pay Meta to show your ad. Meta then decides who sees it within the audience you set. It picks the people most likely to take the action you chose, like filling a form or sending a message. The more results a campaign gets, the better Meta becomes at finding similar people.
Each campaign has three levels:
- Campaign: your objective, such as leads, sales, messages or traffic.
- Ad set: the audience, budget, schedule and placements.
- Ad: the creative: image or video, text, headline and button.
Setup and tracking first
- Create a Business Portfolio (formerly Business Manager) and an ad account in your company’s name.
- Add a payment method and your GST details.
- Install the Meta Pixel on your website and set up the Conversions API if you can. Our Pixel event code generator creates the code for leads and purchases.
- Decide what a result is: a lead, a WhatsApp conversation, a booking or a sale.
Always keep the ad account in your own name, even if an agency runs it.
Choosing the right objective
| Goal | Objective | Good for |
|---|---|---|
| Form enquiries | Leads (instant forms or website) | Services, real estate, education, healthcare |
| Chats | Engagement → messages (WhatsApp) | Local businesses that sell through conversation |
| Online sales | Sales | Online stores with the Pixel set up |
| Local awareness | Awareness or reach | New openings and events |
Avoid the boost button for business goals. It usually optimises for likes rather than customers.
Audiences and targeting
- Location: target only areas you can actually serve. For local businesses, a radius around you or a list of PIN codes and localities works well.
- Broad audiences: with good tracking, Meta often finds buyers best when you set location and age and leave the rest open.
- Custom audiences: website visitors, video viewers, Instagram engagers and your customer list.
- Lookalikes: people similar to your best customers.
Creatives that stop the scroll
The creative decides most of your results. People scroll fast, so:
- Hook in the first two seconds: a question, a bold claim or a visual surprise. Our reel hook generator helps.
- Use vertical video (9:16) for reels and stories, and square or 4:5 for feed.
- Show real people, real work and real results; authentic phone videos often beat polished ads.
- Put the offer and action in the first line of text; only about 125 characters show before “See more”. Check with our ad copy checker.
- Test three to five creatives at a time and refresh them every few weeks.
Lead forms, landing pages or WhatsApp?
Instant forms are quick and cheap per lead, but can bring low-quality leads. Add qualifying questions to improve quality. Landing pages bring more serious enquiries and let you track better. Click-to-WhatsApp ads suit businesses that sell through conversation, since most Indians reply faster on WhatsApp.
Whichever you choose, reply fast. A lead contacted within five minutes is far more likely to become a customer than one called the next day.
Budgets: how much to spend
Most local businesses in India start with ₹15,000 to ₹50,000 a month in ad spend. To work out yours:
- Decide how many customers you want each month.
- Estimate what share of leads become customers.
- Estimate a cost per lead for your industry.
Our ad budget calculator and Meta ads calculator do the maths. Give each ad set enough budget to get around 50 results a week, so Meta can finish its learning phase.
Measuring results
| Metric | What it tells you |
|---|---|
| CTR (click-through rate) | Whether the creative stops the scroll |
| Cost per lead | How efficiently ads bring enquiries |
| Lead-to-customer rate | Lead quality and your follow-up |
| Cost per customer | The number that decides profit |
| ROAS | Revenue per rupee spent, for online sales |
Know your limit: our cost per lead calculator shows the most you can pay for a lead and still profit.
Staying within Meta’s policies
Meta rejects ads that break its advertising standards. Common problems for Indian businesses include before-and-after images for health and beauty, and claims of guaranteed results or income. Text that points at a person’s traits, like “Are you overweight?”, is also a problem. Write about your service, not about the viewer’s problems in a personal way.
Common mistakes
- No tracking, so nobody knows which ads bring customers.
- Targeting all of India when you can serve one city.
- Changing everything every day before results settle.
- One creative running for months.
- Slow follow-up on leads.
- Judging success by likes and reach.
Your Meta ads checklist
| Before launch | First month | Every week |
|---|---|---|
| Ad account in your name, Pixel installed | Test 3–5 creatives and 2 audiences | Move budget to the lowest cost per lead |
| One clear offer and landing page or form | Set up instant WhatsApp replies | Check lead quality with your team |
| A target cost per lead | Track leads to customers | Refresh tired creatives |
