The meta description is the short text below your title in search results. It is not a direct ranking factor, but a good one can increase clicks.
What to include
- A clear summary of what the page offers.
- The main keyword (Google bolds matching words).
- A benefit or reason to click.
- A call to action, where natural.
Length
Aim for roughly 140–160 characters. Longer text may be cut off, especially on mobile.
Examples
Service page: Same-day AC repair in Gurugram by trained technicians. All brands, genuine parts and a 30-day service warranty. Book a visit on WhatsApp.
Blog post: Planning a home interior? See real costs per square foot in 2026, what affects the price and how to save without cutting quality.
Common mistakes
- Leaving it blank, so Google picks random text.
- Copying the same description on every page.
- Keyword lists instead of sentences.
Google may choose its own
Google often generates a snippet from your page that better matches the search. Write a good one anyway; it is used often for your main keywords.
