Slow or unreliable hosting is a common reason to move. Done carefully, migration causes little or no downtime.
Before the move
- Take a full backup of files and database.
- Record all DNS records, especially email (MX).
- Check the new host supports your platform and PHP or Node version.
- Lower DNS TTL a day or two before switching, if possible.
The move
- Copy files and database to the new host, or use a migration plugin.
- Test the site on the new host using a temporary URL or hosts file.
- Install SSL on the new host.
- Update DNS to point to the new host.
After the move
- Check forms, payments and email.
- Check HTTPS and redirects; generate rules with our redirect generator if URLs changed.
- Resubmit your sitemap; create one with our sitemap generator if needed.
- Watch Search Console for errors.
- Keep the old hosting for a week or two before cancelling.
If email was hosted with the old provider, plan its move separately.
