Google Tag Manager (GTM) lets you add tracking codes to your website from one dashboard, without asking a developer every time.
When you need it
- You run ads on Google and Meta and need several tracking codes.
- You want to track button clicks, form submissions or scroll depth.
- You change tracking often.
If you only need basic Analytics, a plugin or direct tag may be enough.
The three building blocks
| Part | What it is | Example |
|---|---|---|
| Tag | The code that runs | GA4 event, Meta Pixel |
| Trigger | When it runs | Click on WhatsApp button |
| Variable | Information used | Click URL, page path |
Set-up steps
- Create an account at tagmanager.google.com.
- Add the two GTM snippets to your website, or use a plugin.
- Add your GA4 tag with your measurement ID.
- Preview, test and then publish.
Example: track WhatsApp clicks
- Enable built-in click variables.
- Create a trigger: “Just links” where Click URL contains “wa.me”.
- Create a GA4 event tag named whatsapp_click with that trigger.
- Mark whatsapp_click as a key event in GA4.
Adding the Meta Pixel
Add the Pixel base code as a custom HTML tag on all pages, and event codes on key actions. Generate event code with our Pixel event generator.
Good habits
- Always use Preview mode before publishing.
- Name tags clearly.
- Write a note on every published version.
