When someone in India needs a product or service, most start with a Google search. Search engine optimisation (SEO) is the work of making sure your business appears for those searches, without paying for every click. Done well, it brings a steady flow of enquiries that keeps growing month after month.
This guide explains how SEO works, what to do first, how long it takes and what it costs, with examples from Indian businesses.
In short: find the searches your customers make and create the most helpful page for each one. Make your site fast and easy for Google to read. Earn trust through reviews and links, and measure enquiries, not just rankings.
How Google decides who ranks first
Google’s goal is to show the most helpful result for each search. It looks at hundreds of signals, but they fall into four groups:
- Relevance: does the page clearly answer what the person searched for?
- Quality and experience: is the content accurate, detailed and written by people who know the subject?
- Trust: do other reputable websites link to you, and do customers review you well?
- Page experience: does the page load quickly and work well on a phone?
There are no shortcuts that last. Tactics that try to trick Google, such as stuffing keywords or buying links, usually stop working and can get a site penalised.
The types of SEO, and which you need
| Type | Best for | Main focus |
|---|---|---|
| Local SEO | Clinics, shops, restaurants, service businesses | Google Maps, Google Business Profile, city and area pages |
| National SEO | Online services, B2B, brands selling across India | Content, authority and competitive keywords |
| E-commerce SEO | Online stores | Category and product pages, technical structure |
Most local businesses should start with local SEO. It is less competitive and brings customers who can actually visit or call you.
Keyword research: finding what customers search for
Keywords are the words people type into Google. Good keyword research tells you which pages to create and what to call them.
- Start with your services: list every service or product and the words customers use for them, not your internal terms. Customers search “teeth cleaning”, not “oral prophylaxis”.
- Add locations: “dentist in Rewari”, “dental clinic near me”, “best dentist Gurugram sector 29”.
- Include Hinglish and questions: many Indians search in mixed English and Hindi, and ask questions like “root canal cost kitna hai”.
- Judge the intent: “root canal cost Rewari” is someone ready to book; “what is a root canal” is someone learning. You need pages for both, but the first brings enquiries faster.
Free ways to find keywords include Google’s autocomplete, the “People also ask” box, Google Search Console and Google Keyword Planner. Our keyword combiner turns your services and locations into every variation in one click.
On-page SEO: making each page clear to Google
Each important keyword needs one page built around it. On that page:
- Page title: include the main keyword and your city, under about 60 characters. Preview it with our Google search preview.
- Meta description: a clear, 150-character summary that makes people want to click.
- One main heading (H1) that matches the search, then subheadings for each question customers have.
- Genuinely useful content: prices or price ranges, process, timelines, photos of your work and answers to common questions.
- Internal links: link related pages together so Google understands your site and visitors find more.
- A clear next step: call, WhatsApp or form, visible on every screen.
Technical SEO: removing what holds you back
Great content will not rank if Google cannot read your site properly. The basics:
- Speed on mobile: most Indian visitors browse on phones, often on mobile data. Compress images with our image compressor and avoid heavy plugins.
- Google Search Console: free, and essential. It shows which pages are indexed, which searches you appear for and any errors.
- XML sitemap and robots.txt: tell Google which pages exist and which to ignore.
- HTTPS: a secure site is expected by visitors and Google.
- Structured data: schema markup helps Google understand your business, products and FAQs.
- Redirects: when you change or remove a page, redirect the old address so you keep its value.
Local SEO and Google Maps
For local searches, Google shows a map with three businesses before the normal results. Those three get most of the calls. To appear there:
- Complete and verify your Google Business Profile, with the right primary category.
- Earn a steady flow of genuine reviews and reply to every one.
- Keep your name, address and phone number identical everywhere online.
- Create a page on your website for each location and service you offer.

Content that ranks in 2026
Google rewards content that shows real experience and expertise. For a business, that means writing about what you actually know:
- Answer the questions customers ask on calls every week.
- Show real examples, photos, prices and results from your work.
- Write under a real person’s name, with their experience.
- Update important pages when prices or processes change.
AI tools can help with research, but pages that simply repeat what every other site says rarely rank. Your own experience is what makes content stand out.
Links and authority
Links from other websites act like recommendations. A few links from relevant, respected Indian sites are worth far more than hundreds from low-quality directories. Safe ways to earn them:
- Listings on trusted local and industry directories.
- Suppliers, partners and associations you work with.
- Useful guides, tools or data that others want to reference.
- Local news and features about your business.
Avoid buying links in bulk. It breaks Google’s guidelines and can undo years of work.
Measuring what matters
Rankings are useful, but they are not the goal. Track:
| Measure | Where to find it |
|---|---|
| Searches you appear for, clicks and position | Google Search Console |
| Visitors from Google and what they do | Google Analytics 4 |
| Calls and direction requests from Maps | Google Business Profile performance |
| Enquiries from search | Form tracking, call tracking and asking “how did you find us?” |
How long SEO takes and what it costs
Most businesses see movement within 6 to 8 weeks and a clear rise in enquiries within 3 to 6 months. Competitive keywords and new websites take longer.
In India, SEO for small and medium businesses usually costs between ₹8,000 and ₹50,000 a month, depending on competition, website size and how much content is needed. See our SEO packages price guide for details.
Common SEO mistakes
- One page trying to rank for every service and city.
- Copying content from competitors or manufacturers.
- Redesigning a website without redirecting old pages.
- Ignoring mobile speed.
- Judging SEO by rankings for keywords nobody searches.
- Giving up after six weeks.
