SEO is usually split into a few types, so it is easier to plan the work. The video explains each type; the notes below summarise them with examples.
On-page SEO
Everything on the page itself:
- A title tag and meta description that match the search.
- One clear H1 heading and logical subheadings.
- Useful text that answers the question fully.
- Images with descriptive file names and alt text.
- Links to related pages on your own site.
Our meta tag generator helps with the first item.
Off-page SEO
Signals from outside your website: links from other trusted sites, mentions of your brand, social shares, and for local businesses, reviews and directory listings. Quality beats quantity; one link from a respected local news site is worth more than hundreds from spammy directories.
Technical SEO
Making sure search engines can crawl and index your site: page speed, mobile-friendliness, HTTPS, a sitemap, a sensible robots.txt (see our robots.txt generator), clean URLs and no broken pages.
Local SEO
For businesses that serve a city or area. It covers your Google Business Profile, reviews, the same name, address and phone number everywhere, and pages for the areas you serve.
Which comes first?
Fix technical problems first, because nothing else works if Google cannot read your pages. Then improve on-page content, then build off-page signals over time.
