Products sold in India must meet labelling and safety rules. Marketplaces can block listings or accounts for non-compliant products.
This is a general overview. Rules vary by product category and change; confirm requirements with experts and official sources.
Packaged commodity labels
Under the Legal Metrology (Packaged Commodities) Rules, pre-packaged products typically need declarations such as:
- Name and address of manufacturer, packer or importer.
- Common or generic name of the product.
- Net quantity.
- Month and year of manufacture or import.
- MRP (inclusive of taxes).
- Country of origin.
- Consumer care details.
E-commerce listings are also expected to display key declarations.
BIS certification
Many product categories are covered by Quality Control Orders requiring BIS certification, such as certain electronics, toys and household products. Check if your product is covered.
Other licences
- FSSAI for food.
- Cosmetics and drugs regulations for beauty and health products.
